YSL Ambassador Natasha Severino chats with Vogue Beauty Editor Cleo Glyde backstage at Myer?s spring/summer show.

The YSL beauty message this year is illumination and reflective light on the high points of the face. How have you incorporated this for the show?

We wanted exotic glamour – but with the YSL luminosity. The face is completely bronze and neutral, yet reflective on cheeks and temples. The highlight of colour comes from a bright, almost neon orange lip that only comes down the runway at certain intervals. I have used the Dare To Glow Moisturiser as a base, with the new Touche Éclat foundation over the top to achieve a flawless face with an amazing inner light.

Why did you decide to make the skin a flawless, blank canvas and the lip the main event?

As you can imagine, when you are trying to create a beauty look for over 250 exits showing 70 designers, it’s a huge feat to come up with something that ties everything in beautifully and complements every designer. It’s better to focus on one memorable trait – and neon orange is a standout colour that works with summer and the African theme.

The strict hair really makes that punchy number #13 lip colour pop out.

That’s the thing about a slightly neon tone – it makes everything look modern and edgy. It is very resort with the tawny skin that we’re doing today, yet completely cyber with white hair and a more wintery palette. With the bold make-up trend, sometimes all you need is one highlighted feature – but in a really unusual colour that takes you out of your comfort zone.

Even though the rest of the face is neutral, you have been able to still create highly effective contouring that is as dramatic as colour.

This is high contouring – a more subtle way of creating drama on the face. We have “sculpted” the cheekbones and the eye sockets with bronzing powder #3 and then highlighted again with Dare To Glow on the inner quarter of the eyes, as well as the lips and cheekbones. It’s creating a glamorous depth to the face and illusion of volume by shading and highlighting – a wonderful way to complement just one bold colour.
